Art Lucas Lecture: Inside the Labyrinth of CaregivingSep 12, 2022 12:00 PM - 01:30 PMEric P. Newman Education Center
Despite more than 30 years as a hospice social worker, administrator and researcher, Dr. Parker Oliver found herself a caregiver and unprepared for the end-of-life journey when her husband was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. She will integrate her professional experience and research with her personal experience sharing the transitions she experienced while moving from her role as wife, caregiver and finally, widow. Silently working within the labyrinth of her husband’s cancer journey, Debbie experiences interactional suffering as she encounters a health care system where she feels invisible. Caregivers focus on caring for their loved one and remain quiet about their own needs, giving all they have to keep promises and bring their loved ones peace. In this journey of a million losses, she advocates that the caregivers need a care team and a care plan as well, and the journey continues beyond the death of their loved one. |
